Carson, I totally get that - it's sort of how I feel the crackle of needle on vinyl that today's youngsters probably know nothing about. : )

Noise isn't a bad thing. It's all dependent on how you use it.

In some sense, it's only noise if you're not listening.

I liken it to a bustling cocktail party. You can walk in and all of those voices combine to create a single, incomprehensible babbling noise.

If you wade into the crowd and engage the chatting small groups--the individual pieces of that voicehum noise, you realize there's conversation there.

Sure, Twitter also has its share of crazy dudes sitting in the corner screaming to themselves, but no analogy is perfect.

The noise isn't noise. It's just a lot of simultaneous communication. Hone in on the components that matter, that inspire, that expand, that ______ (insert positive verb here) and the distraction goes away.

By the way, my favorite noise (aside from the occasional ka-ching) is on a recording of Lou Reed's "Romeo Had Juliette" right after the first chords, you can hear that sound of fingers moving on the guitar strings. I mention this because you are a rock music nerd who will probably know what I'm talking about!
