So very true. And when the interaction becomes more about who you are with instead of who you are then it becomes fake. It stops being about getting to know someone and more about what the person can get from you. Don't we ever learn?

When we connect on a friendly/(person to person) level we actually do a better job of creating friendships that last.

I attended a similar event earlier this year and as I met people and they wanted to exchange contact info/cards, all I had was my employer's card. I was at the event representing myself, and my blog, not my employer. It wouldn't have been appropriate for me to do otherwise. From that point on I got more serious about creating my own professional identity, branding, outside of a specific employer. Still trying to figure out how to navigate these waters successfully. Thanks for sharing your experience and perspective - I think your observations about the differences related to type of conference and motivation of attendees are spot on.

Well since you were with me yesterday Deb, Im glad you didnt tell them "Im with stupid" 8).

I think you make a very good point about the difference between a new media event and a more traditional business event. The whole point of new media is being more human and not a faceless number.

Obviously the folks you mentioned in your post didn't get that.
