Forgive my absence of over a week. This has been a crazy busy time at the day job! I couldn’t sleep tonight, however, so you wake to find a list of community manager and social media jobs. I’m hoping for this to be a regular feature. I’ve been listing daily leads at my Freelance Writing Jobs blog for almost four years and it goes over well. I’m not sure I’ll be doing this daily, but weekly ought to do the trick.

Something that’s bugging me are all the people hiring community managers as unpaid interns. Trust me, you need experience for this gig.

Here’s a gig where I’m sure lots of folks wish there was a telecommute option. Unfortunately for you, (or fortunately for the folks in these areas) the job is an on-site position in either Omaha or Mountain View, CA.

Job Description

The Group Community Manager can be located in either our Mountain View, CA office or our Omaha, NE office and is the primary resource for LinkedIn’s group managers, helping them build thriving, successful professional communities on LinkedIn. The manager guides and develops managers, addresses problems, represents group managers and their needs to LinkedIn’s product development organization, collects and provides tools and information about effective group management.

Responsibilities:
· Market research & community listening (inbound)
· Company/product education & evangelism (outbound)
· Identify/amplify community cheerleaders (both)
· Support internal customers – Executive team, Senior Management team, Omaha, and California offices
· Drive engagement among managers through online events
· Serve as the primary point of contact and provide best practice guidance in the areas of content and service development, event programming, online facilitation, member outreach, etc.
· Drive to completion, from investigation to delivery, initiatives that use community, social networking, and other technologies to increase community participation, in collaboration with community managers.
· Develop and post interactive content that encourages participation and the development of member-generated content to ensure that the community is achieving its objectives
· Drive processes that encourage member-to-member interaction
· Lead the day-to-day operations of the managed community in conjunction with internal community owners
· Monitor and moderate community participation to ensure that rules of engagement are adhered to
· Assist in the development of the Community platform and ensuring that it meets the objectives of the Community
· Provide tracking and metrics to communicate and validate the Community interaction
· Community Advocate – Actively engaged with community members by representing and building relationships in both directions. Strong listening skills are a must
· Brand Evangelist – will promote events, products, and upgrades to customers and will build trust with the community
· Savvy Communicator – ability to mediate and communicate utilizing various communication tools
· Gathers community input for future product and services – Responsible for gathering the requirements of the community in a responsible way and presenting back to the product teams. Feedback conduit for company and community and sync up the two.

Even WalMart understands the need for Community. Actually WalMart totally gets the community thing. The have their 11 Moms blogging network, with accompanying BlogTalkRadio shows, they know the importance of community and a heavy web presence. They’re also making sure to get the most bang out of their social media buck because they’re hiring a Community Analyst. It’s a great way to assess the needs of the consumer.

Here are some details:

The Community Analyst is an advocate for the community initiative and all its components (e.g. classifieds). He or she identifies best practices and insures no inappropriate content gets on the site, or is identified/escalated in the organization or media. As a part of supporting the community team, this individual is responsible for making sure performance of the experience meets expectations, including timeliness of the user generated content experience. As a subject matter expert for community, they will deliver reporting and insights for all community functionality to advance the organization’s knowledge about online community. Key success metrics for the role are zero internal or media issues, uptime/responsiveness/customer service metrics, and delivery of reporting metrics and insights.

They’re looking for skills to:

*Strong analytical skills

*Experience developing reports/custom inquiries and with
execution of dashboards and reporting

*Retail Industry experience is a plus

*Familiarity with online marketing metrics such as ROI,
click-through rate, cost-per-click, conversion rate, average order
size, etc.

*Skills at working with proprietary and leading web site
reporting tools

*High Level of Comfort with MS Office, specifically MS Excel,
MS Access and Power Point

*Ability to organize and prioritize multiple requests or
escalate unresolved issues when necessary.

*Previous vendor management experience.

*An understanding of and passion for online community and
consumer-focused e-commerce

This isn’t a job for the sweats and bunny slippers crowd. You will have to go into the office in Brisbane, California. Since WalMart is destined to survive the current crisis with the economy, and their stock is actually up, it doesn’t seem like a bad gig to have. This was tweeted around quite a bit yesterday, even so, I thought it would be an ideal job for a beer lovin’ Community Manager. Now, the gig is based in Australia and I haven’t yet been able to figure out whether or not it’s only for Aussies or if they rest of the world can have at it too.

The lucky lander of this gig will be known as the “Mayor of Beer.” Here are some details:

The XXXX online community covers a range of sites for our consumers and brand fans. These include sites for XXXX Gold, Beach Cricket, V8 Supercars, Angels, Ale House, Facebook and YouTube content, and much more.
As Community Manager, you’ll be a multi-channel brand advocate – leading, guiding, shaping, updating, integrating and communicating with the whole community. Your community will need you to “be” the XXXX brand. And we’ll need you to be outgoing, sociable, flexible with hours and travel, responsive to emails, forums, phone calls etc, professionally skilled, and full of creative ideas.

Travel and flexibility? I’m liking it so far…

This one appears to be a temporary, contract gig, paying $18-$20.  Here’s the opening bit:

A major international children’s health organization is seeking an online community fundraising organizer to help grow visibility for the group in the U.S. This would be a part-time, hourly position working approximately 10-12 hours per week. Salary is commensurate with experience, ranging from $18 to $25 per hour. Bonuses will be offered for meeting specific growth numbers. The position is temporary, and will run from now through March 30th, 2009, with the possibility for extension based on initial traction.

REQUIREMENTS
To be successful, the organizer must have prior volunteer or paid community development and fundraising experience, preferably for health-related non-profit organizations. The organizer must have extensive knowledge of online social networks, including Facebook and LinkedIn. Strong organizational skills, as well as the ability to work independently are important. A track record of successful community development and fundraising is desired. Experience with online multimedia content, including the ability to write blogs and microblogs, and to produce audio and video content is a plus. The organizer will not be provided a computer or Internet access and will be responsible for obtaining these. The organizer must be available by telephone during business hours. The organizer can work from home, or from offices located in Cambridge, Mass., though preference will be for individuals based in the Cambridge, Mass. area.

We’re looking for someone who is:

* Passionate but discriminating about social media, fluent in “web 2.0? and a super-user of tools like del.icio.us, RSS, Flickr, YouTube, widgets, and blogs

Can’t say that I blame them, being a community manager is probably the only job (besides blogger and freelance writer) that I actually enjoyed. And so, as a service to our fellow Community Managers, the Community Manager Job of the Day. Today’s job came from Crunchboard.

Community Moderator Wanted

This job is full time in San Francisco. Note: it’s not a telecommute position and they don’t appear to want to be convinced of the reasons you should work from home. Still, looks like a fun gig if you’re in the neighborhood. Here’s a brief description from the ad:

Looking for a super smart, and bursting with energy senior moderator for a super-stealth new online company backed and funded by some legendary billionaires. We aren’t raising money, we don’t need VCs, and we are hiring!

We are looking for a person who can help make our new online communities the place for the owners and managers of SMBs. We believe in making sure the community members are ecstatic with the community. If you don’t believe that is possible or don’t know what an SMB is, this job isn’t for you.

Responsibilities include:

  • Answering questions from the community
  • Finding folks to answer questions if you can’t
  • Making sure the community is feeling all warm and fuzzy
  • Keeping track of stats and growth

So you dig communities and think you’d make a decent Community Manager. There’s just one problem, you’re not sure where to find the gigs. Community Manager jobs aren’t plentiful at the moment, but there are several places to subscribe to or bookmark to land these types of jobs.

Check it out:

  1. Social Networking Jobs – A job board listing various social networking gigs, including community management.
  2. Community Guy – Jake McKee’s community building blog also rocks a job board.
  3. Craigslist - No, really. I landed on my community management job by accident. I was looking for leads for my Freelance Writing Jobs blog and saw the full time community gig nestled in among the blogging gigs.
  4. The Net-Savvy Executive – Has a social media job board.
  5. ProBlogger- Darren Rowse has the occasional community management gig listed at the ProBlogger job board.
  6. Online job boards – Online job boards such as Monster, Hot Jobs and Career Builder list the occasional community manager gig here and there.
  7. Google Alerts – Set up a Google Alert for “Community Manager” to receive updates in the mailbox every time the Google spiders pick up a community manager jobs listing.
  8. Social networks – Many community manager gigs aren’t advertised. Instead, The Powers That Be put out word on various social networks. Do a search and see what you come up with
  9. Websites – Many of your favorite websites and social networks hire community managers but they don’t announce it in big flashing letters. Instead they quietly post it to their websites under the “Jobs” or “Work for Us” sections. Do a regular patrol of your favorite communities, as you never know when one of the jobs will turn up.
  10. You! - That’s right. You. Do you know of a community in need of management? Contact them regardless of whether or not they placed an ad and convince them of why they can benefit from your services.
