30 Things I Miss

  1. Receiving a long, rambling, hand-written letter from a friend in my mailbox.
  2. Telling my parents I’m going “out” with them still somehow knowing where I’m going and when I’ll be home.
  3. Saturday morning cartoons. When cartoons were only on Saturday mornings.
  4. Handwritten thank you cards.
  5. Charleston Chews.
  6. Going outside in the summer to cool off.
  7. Talking to neighbors.
  8. Not having to make an appointment before going to a friend’s house.
  9. Not worrying about phone calls when I’m not at home.
  10. Manners.
  11. Family TV that was really family TV.
  12. The snap, crackle and pop of needle on vinyl.
  13. Album covers.
  14. Families gathered around the front stoop on hot summer nights.
  15. Charleston Chews.
  16. Riding bikes double – without helmets.
  17. Library research.
  18. One phone & phone number per household.
  19. The phone not ringing during dinner hours or after 9:00 p.m. – because that would be rude.
  20. Woolworths
  21. Carhops
  22. Marathon Bars
  23. Getting dirty
  24. Dressing up on holidays
  25. Calling adults “Mr.” and “Mrs.”
  26. Jacks
  27. Playing outside until the streetlights came on
  28. Walking everywhere.
  29. Block-wide kickball games
  30. Tin can string phones.

Great list. The good thing is that there are still a few of those things you can have or do, as Sonic still has carhops ;)

I also miss “natural” communication–cards, people not on their freaking iWhatever, conversation without interruptions. I also miss not knowing about things that sometimes stress me out now–money, caloric content, achievement, etc. Although you can control how you handle those things as an adult, there is that naive innocence as a child where you don’t even know you should care.

Plus, you could run around the yard without a bra and makeup, singing and eating ice cream every day and no one thought you were a weirdo. That might not stop me now, but I do get funny looks ;)

I love this list! Above all, I miss manners. It seems “common courtesy” is not so common anymore. :(
